The first topic we discussed at on the MOVE was cross training. The discussion was led by professional dancer, Helen Husak.
Here are my notes, enjoy!
____________
Not all of us are lucky enough to live in cities where there is a "Harbour Dance" or "Steps",
where daily technique classes are offered in almost every style and level of dance. This is when cross training becomes very important to dancers!
What is cross training?
Dancers should be doing at least one technique class a day. In edmonton this becomes rather challenging (depending what style you are focusing on). So instead of taking a dance class, you can take a yoga class, go for a swim, or if your injured and have to take it easy, you can research new companies, material or books!
Cross training is about maintenance and finding connections between forms of movement!
Two of the most popular forms of cross training for dancers are yoga and pilates. Both of these activities focus on core and creating long and lean muscles. I've personally found that yoga has helped me build my back strength and focus - making arabesques much easier!
Many dancers are now certified yoga and/or pilates teachers. This helps them support themselves financially, by doing work that benefits their craft!
What's your favourite type of cross training?
