In a year.

Hi Blog Land!

It's been ages, how are you doing? Sorry I've been missing in action, but I've had a lovely/busy summer and I hope that you have too!

I just had my 25th Birthday, isn't that crazy! I'm definitely feeling a bit older, especially as I'm taking some drop-in classes at Harbour Dance Centre this week, and compared to the 19 year olds, there are definitely some differences between us. I'm not just talking about lady curves or the fact that they look like children to me, but I've noticed a difference in my dancing. A maturity (hopefully).

I think a major thing that's really sunk in for me this year is that you have to embrace yourself. I know you're all thinking, DUHH! But it's surprisingly harder than you think. I like dancing big. I like pushing myself and I like to tell a story. I think this summer I have really started enjoying to dance the way I want to dance. Something I had always heard growing up was "watch your in-between steps and transitions" and I think I'm finally doing it. I always understood what it meant, but I had a hard time applying it. It's something that I've been focusing on for many years and now I'm starting to see it and feel it when I dance. I've learnt time after time that dancing makes me happy. And that I am usually happiest when dancing. So this year, I'm going to try and dance. A lot! To keep motivated and learning, because it's something I love to do!

So much has changed in this past year. Last year I celebrated my birthday in Brighton. This year I was at home for my birthday for the first time in 8 years! I am now back in Canada for good (for now) and I am excited to focus on my career and self improvement!

Those are some of my goals for this up coming year, I can't wait to dance, dance, dance!

Do you guys have any goals for the upcoming season?

Thanks for tuning in!

Auditions

Alright folks, it's audition season. For any of my new readers who might not know, I'm a professional actor, which means auditioning is one of the first steps to landing a role.

For anyone who hasn't auditioned before, they can be pretty nerve racking, that is... if you let them be. I'm still figuring out how to get my 'best audition' and I think that's something you never really stop improving on. Everyone has there audition tricks or habits, but here are some things I've been thinking about lately! I know most of these sound obvious, but they're just so important to remind yourself of.

1. Be prepared. And do it in chunks. Don't expect yourself to memorize a monologue or song in just one go. Layer it in. Take your dance classes, so when it comes time to audition you're already at the level you want to be at.

2. Do the best YOU can do. Don't compare yourself to others, don't judge yourself, and don't set yourself up to fail by acting like you've already been defeated.

3. Have fun and breathe. Things that I very often forget to do in life. This is why you come so prepared. So when it comes time for your actual audition, you can just relax and do your work.

Even if you never have to go through the audition process, these three steps can help you in an interview, oral presentation, or even an exam. What are your tips for success in stressful situations???

The Royal Opera House & Afternoon Tea

Hello Friends! I hope everyone is having a good February. This month has probably been the most exciting month for me so far of my time here in the UK. As well as my trip to Paris and Scotland, I was also lucky enough to watch two Ballets at the Royal Opera House within the span of two weeks. As most of you know, I work front of House at the ROH, one of the best Opera/Ballet houses in the world. It's been such a pleasure working there and I'm very sad that I have less than a month left. I've learnt so much about Opera, which was relatively new to me, and I've also rekindled my love for ballet.

[ I had to get a shot of me in Orchestra Stalls lovin' life ]

The first ballet that I had the pleasure of watching was the Romantic Ballet, Giselle. It was my first time seeing it and I really, really enjoyed it. I think a big part of it was because my favourite male Ballet dancer, Federico Bonelli, was playing the leading man. Swoon. He's just the nicest, most handsome guy ever.

[ Margot Fonteyn ]

After the ballet this handsome guy took me out for Afternoon Tea. It was a day of firsts for Remi. He'd never been to the ballet before, or gone out for Afternoon Tea. It was a special day indeed!

So after a week long holiday I topped it all off with another trip to the ballet. I am the luckiest duck in the world, I know! Yesterday evening I saw the latest triple bill, Rhapsody/Tetractys/ Gloria. Unfortunately due to injury during the matinee performance Tetractys was not performed. I was a bit disappointed I'm not going to lie, but I'm SO thankful that the upcoming superstar, Natalia Osipova only suffered a mild concussion and would be back dancing shortly. Isn't that crazy, no sweat it's just a mild concussion. Ballerinas aren't just tough. They are the toughest.

One of my favourite parts of that evening was watching Carlos Acosta perform in Gloria. I think it's my favourite role I've seen him in. I'm going to miss the Royal Opera House, but I know I will be back for lots of visits. Here's to the future!

Autumn Leaves

[ Johnny Flynn concert. Dream come true ]

[ Canadian Thanksgiving in London ]

[ Halloween ]

It's November, can you believe it? I sure can't. It already looks like Christmas in Covent Garden, time is moving quickly folks. I'm just gonna start by saying this Autumn was amazing! From the Speakeasy, Johnny Flynn concert, carving pumpkins with Remi, to the loveliest Thanksgiving that I've had since moving away from home (eight years ago)! Fun events aside, I've also been feeling incredibly inspired lately. I've gotten back into dance classes and have fallen in love with tap dancing all over again. My legs are aching from a three hour masterclass I did with Michelle Dorrance this Monday. Things are good. I finally feel like I'm catching up with myself and problems are finally sorting themselves out.

I hope everyone has had a lovely Autumn! What are you most looking forward to this Winter?

The Blitz Party: Part II - Black and White

 Happy New Year!

 Ladies.

Aren't they great!

 The ensemble.

A cute soldier asked me to dance. Swoon.

It was probably one of the most insane/surreal moments of the evening.

On the tube.

Like I said in Part I, this New Year's Eve was one of the best in my life. I attended the Annual NYE Blitz party with my dear friends, Nic and Paddy! Here are some of my favourite photos of Patricks.

A Chorus Line

Normally I tend to stay away from talking about auditions on my blog and social media, but I decided to make an exception for this one.

A little bit of good luck from my roommate!!!

On October 1st, I got in line for the open call for A Chorus Line, West End. I was 1 of 700 people that auditioned, number 172 to be exact. I woke up at 5:45 in the morning, after not getting much sleep due to nerves and packing. I had everything all laid out and ready to go. I ate breakfast and put on my full stage make-up, minus the lips. No one should ever wear that much make-up so early in the morning. I looked out my window and of course it was raining! I layered up: hat, scarf, gloves, and umbrella and head out the door. For those of you that know me well, you will know that I'm not a morning person. I repeat I am NOT a morning person.

The line behind me. Although it was tough getting up early, I am so thankful that I did.

I ended up arriving at the Palladium Theatre at about 7:30am, to find that the queue wasn't too bad. I grabbed a tea and got in line. It wasn't long before I met my first audition pal, Nicola. We started playing the game of guessing who was joining the queue to audition. I'm telling you now, this game proved to be very entertaining, partly because you can spot a dancer from a mile away. We later met another new friend, Mel. It was so nice to meet such lovely people, especially in such a stressful situation. It was great to have new pals to joke with.

Excited, tired and very nervous! That's Mel popping out from behind me. Laughs!

The queue started moving around 9:15am. We didn't get our audition numbers till about 11am, turns out that the small looking line in front of us was actually 170 people. Hurry up and wait was the name of the game. I kept saying that it was like going to the airport, but we had to wait outside in the rain. The 3 of us were so excited that we got in, it didn't matter much. We got into the 1st holding room where there were already dancers trying to warmup from outside. I quickly changed, put on my red lipstick, and started stretching. It was just like the documentary Every Little Step. In round 1 they wanted to see a double ballet pirouette on each side. I had to keep reminding myself "You've pirouetting for about 15 years, you can do this". Although I was forcing myself to think positive, it's hard not to get nervous. We waited for around an hour, then finally it was our turn to turn.

"Can we get numbers 150 - 200 on stand-by, please." That's us, we quickly grabbed our things and headed into the theatre. That was my first time ever in the Palladium, one of the biggest theatres in the West End and I headed right up the stars, onto the stage.  I tucked my things away and got into the right line. Baayork Lee (the original 'Connie' and choreographer of the revival productions) herself explained what they wanted to see from us. "Please say your name. Tendu prepare, clean double on the right. Land in a lunge. Tendu left, prepare, pirouette on the left." We were off to the races and it was terrifying. I tried to keep smiling, but it was difficult as I saw people battling the Marley floor and character shoes around me. It was not an easy feat. I could feel my breath get shorter and shorter as it came closer to my turn. Finally, it was go time. I decided to introduce myself. "Hi, I'm Chelsea Preston", I was the first, and I believe only 'American' accent in my group. I tendued, prepared double to the right - nailed it! Hooray! Now for the left...tendu, prepare, double pirouette and I landed it. Not as smoothly as the right, but I landed it. I was shaking from the nerves. That was definitely one of the most nerve-racking things I've had to do in my career/life. Do a double in from of about 70 people in dead silence, I'd be alright if I never had to do that again. I waited for everyone else to finish turning and then they had a few minutes to discuss and organize themselves about who was moving on. It was exactly like the film. "If we don't call your number, thank you for your time". All I was thinking was "I just want to dance! Please, just let me dance!"

Tap Shoes

This past Christmas right before going on stage to perform, one of my front taps exploded into a whole bunch of pieces. This was the result.

I went on with my broken tap. Not going to lie, I was a little worried, but everything went well and the audience loved it. I am definitely in need of a new pair of tap shoes. I haven't gotten new shoes yet, but they are high up on my wish list. When I was in Vancouver I purchased new front taps for my old shoes and high heels taps so that I can build up a pair of my character shoes.

I have been craving/needing high heel tap shoes for over a year now. Hopefully I will have a pair by the end of the month! I can't wait!

What's your favourite style of high heel tap shoe?

The Renaissance of Ballet

Ballet was born during the time of the Renaissance, and now it is being reborn once again!

Thanks to TV shows like: So You Think You Can DanceAmerica's Best Dance Crew and Dancing With The Stars, dance has really made it's way back into our culture.

It still has a long way to go compared to our friends in Europe, but at least it's there for everyday people to watch!

Ballet has recently been reborn, thanks to the highly talked about film...yes, I know you know what I am talking about - Black Swan.

This 'R' rated movie has shown the world how sexy ballet can be.

on the MOVE: injury prevention and recovery

This is a sensitive topic for most athletes and artists!

For this topic Dr. Sian Williams, chiropractor and former actor, talked to the group. She discussed lifestyle choices, training disciplines, form, footwear and common injuries!

Sian encouraged us to think for ourselves! Using the knowledge and experience that we already had as a collective!

Here are the questions she asked:

dance clip 5: you can tap to anything

When I tap with J & B at the Open Jam (which isn't as much as I would like), a lot of people ask "Well,  could tap to this song". 1 of us responds quickly - "You can tap to anything!"

on the MOVE: cross training

The first topic we discussed at on the MOVE was cross training. The discussion was led by professional dancer, Helen Husak.
Here are my notes, enjoy!
____________

Not all of us are lucky enough to live in cities where there is a "Harbour Dance" or "Steps",
where daily technique classes are offered in almost every style and level of dance. This is when cross training becomes very important to dancers!

What is cross training?

on the MOVE: intro

Last Sunday I attended a professional development conference called on the Move held by the Dancer Transition Resource Centre!

It was such an amazing experience. I learnt so many things about the transition from student to professional, the AB dance community and much, much more.

Since I know many of my friends and colleagues did not attend, I would love to share some info with everyone. Within the next couple of weeks I will be writing articles discussing the topics from on the MOVE!
